Wicklow Biodiversity Working Group (BWG)

Wicklow County Council has formed a Biodiversity Working Group to support the development of the Local Biodiversity Action Plan.

This non-statutory advisory group will work closely with the Biodiversity Officer to help shape and deliver the objectives of the plan. Members will collaborate on reviewing actions, contributing expertise, and fostering partnerships to protect Wicklow’s natural heritage.

The initial commitment is until July 2025, focusing on the drafting of the plan.  After the plan is launched, there will be an opportunity to extend the role, with the group transitioning into a steering committee overseeing the plan’s implementation for the next five years.

Angie Hollingsworth

Community & Voluntary Pillar Representative

Angie is primarily interested in gardening and through this pastime and volunteering with Bray Tidy Towns she is learning about biodiversity and the Local Biodiversity Action Plan.  She has recently retired and would like to take part in helping to shape and deliver the objectives of the Plan.

Keith Scanlon

Social Inclusion Pillar Representative

Keith has been passionate about Biodiversity planning, protection and restoration since growing up in a lovely farming and fishing community in the bogs of the River Moy at the foot of the Ox Mountains in Co Mayo. The community “meitheal” approach to protecting and enjoying nature and society that we took then is one that is important now also. Keith is a dad, an active citizen and community volunteer, an Engineering Scientist and (recently qualified) Social Scientist. He has volunteered in (and sometimes directed) a range of social and environmental charity and community groups including Wicklow Volunteer Centre, BARSS, SWAN Ireland, Delgany Community Council and Tidy Towns. He has worked for fairness, eco-social welfare, Just Transition and Transformation, diversity and inclusion in all settings. He represents the underdog and the most diverse and most vulnerable stakeholders in this and future generations. Working with youth, parents, elders, and Cllrs, Keith drafted the 2019 WCC declaration of Climate and Biodiversity Emergency and the Commitment to lead by example with a strong and inclusive Biodiversity Action Plan (as well as a strong and inclusive Climate Action Plan). Others followed Wicklow. Keith served on the first CABA SPC.

Keith sometimes tries to be a bit funny too (say his daughters). I think that’s the bottom line, our community and children. Ar scÃĄth a cÃĐile a mhaireann na daoine.
