Alex Konieczka

Greystones MD Environmental Pillar Seat

Alex Konieczka is an ecologist with a BSc in Natural Sciences (specialising in Environmental Science) from Trinity College Dublin. With over 10 years of experience in climate action, environmental project management, and community-led initiatives, she combines strong scientific grounding with first-hand lifelong passion for living in harmony with nature.

Before founding Understory, Alex worked as an innovation researcher and sustainability project manager, designing and leading an award-winning corporate sustainability programme for a Fortune 500 company that drove measurable global change. Encouraged by its impact and the support of colleagues and clients, she followed her calling and established Understory in 2020, to focus on grassroots environmental action, education, and zero-waste initiatives.

As the Director of Understory, a verified social enterprise, Alex leads and drives innovative practice as a project manager, educator, youth worker and zero-waste artist. Understory delivers community-led, nature-based, and climate action projects and education programmes that turn environmental challenges into practical action – from rainwater retention and waste reduction to biodiversity, permaculture, and citizen science – engaging thousands of participants across Ireland and beyond.

She is a qualified trainer (QQI L5 in Training Delivery and Evaluation) and is also a part-time KWETB Community Education tutor and Water Stewardship Manager with the All-Ireland Rivers Trust.

Keith Scanlon

Bray MD Environmental Pillar Seat

Keith has been a community and environmental volunteer in Wicklow since about 2000 (and not since the water of the Three Trouts Glacier carved the Glen of the Downs, as his kids sometimes imply).

Keith has been involved as a parent, environmentalist and community networker in Wicklow and Ireland declaring Climate and Biodiversity Emergency 2019, the Children and Young People’s Assembly on Biodiversity Loss 2022, and the Biodiversity Action Plan 2026. He served on the early Climate And Biodiversity Action (CABA aka CERA) Strategic Policy Committee, Volunteer Wicklow, SWAN, River Trust, Delgany Tidy Towns, Greystones Tidy Towns, and Wicklow Planning Alliance. Keith has pet projects to facilitate and foster Local Community Climate Action and to declare Glen of the Downs, La Touch Bellevue, Three Trouts River and the Greystones Coast a UNESCO World Heritage Area (and possibly an MPA).
